Field: Savings and Investments of Adults in the Family of the Individual

Description

The value of assets and/or estimates from interest on savings of adults in the family, as reported by FRS respondents, where:

• an adult is defined as an individual aged over 16 and not a dependant child (see Type of Individual by Age Category for more information).
• a family is defined as a single adult or a married or cohabiting couple and any dependent children (see Family Type for more information).

Note that figures do not include assets and investments held by children in the family.

• No savings
• Less than £1,500
• £1,500 but less than £3,000
• £3,000 but less than £8,000
• £8,000 but less than £10,000
• £10,000 but less than £16,000
• £16,000 but less than £20,000
• £20,000 or more

Quality Statement

The data relating to investments and savings should be treated with caution. Questions relating to investments are a sensitive section of the questionnaire and have a low response rate. A high proportion of respondents do not know the interest received on their investments. It is likely that there is some under-reporting of capital by respondents, in terms of both the actual values of the savings and the investment income.
